Chatbot vs FAQ Page: When Each Actually Saves Time

The Stability Argument: FAQ Pages Don't Drift

I had a client whose new chatbot kept quoting a return policy that had been dead for two months. Nobody had touched the training data since launch, and every wrong answer showed up in a review a week later.

That's basically this whole post. Chatbots and FAQ pages get pitched as a package deal, build both, cover your bases, done. That advice skips the actual question a business owner is asking: which one do I need right now, and what does it cost me to keep working?

Here's the answer nobody wants to hear. A FAQ page you touch once a quarter often solves more support problems, faster, than a chatbot you have to babysit every week.

A FAQ page is write-once. You publish it, update it when policy changes, and it just sits there being correct. A chatbot is never done. It's always live, always answering in real time, which means it's always one policy change away from being wrong.

On the AI integration work I've done for stores and marketplaces, the chatbot failures that actually hurt weren't bad conversations. They were outdated answers. A customer gets told the return window is 30 days because that's what the training data said, except the policy changed to 14 days last month and nobody updated the bot. At that point you haven't solved a support problem, you've created a worse one, because the customer got a confident wrong answer instead of no answer at all.

If you're updating policies more than once a quarter, a FAQ page needs a bit more upkeep. A chatbot gets harder to maintain faster, because
